Healing is half the tattoo.
How quickly you heal depends on the size and detail of your tattoo — bigger pieces cause more trauma to the skin, so they stay red and swollen for longer.
- You'll probably notice fluid oozing from the tattoo — blood, plasma and some extra ink. The skin will be red and sore, and might feel slightly warm to the touch. All normal.
- Cleanse the area with warm water and fragrance-free soap. Rinse well, then lightly pat the skin dry.
- Wait a few minutes before applying whatever ointment or lotion your artist recommends.
- Your tattoo will take on a duller, cloudier appearance — that's the skin healing. Scabs may start to form.
- Keep washing it once or twice a day. You might see some ink running into the sink — that's just excess ink coming up through the skin.
- Let the skin dry before applying the recommended ointment or lotion.
- Clean hands first, always. Cleanse the area and let the skin dry before applying the recommended ointment or lotion.
- Redness should start to fade, with some light scabbing over the tattoo — not as thick as a cut scab, but it may be raised.
- Don't pick at the scabs — that can cause scarring.
- Keep washing once or twice a day, with ointment or lotion once a day if needed or recommended.
- By now the scabs have hardened and will begin to flake off.
- Don't pick at them or pull them off — let them come off naturally, or you could pull out ink and leave scars.
- The skin may get very itchy. Gently rub in a fragrance-free, alcohol-free moisturiser once daily to relieve it.
- Still red and swollen at this stage? That could be an infection — come see us, or consult a healthcare professional.
- Most of the big flakes will be gone and the scabs should be going away. You might still see some dead skin — it will clear up too.
- The area might still look dry and dull. Keep moisturising until the skin looks hydrated again.
- The outer layers of skin heal by the second or third week; the deeper layers can take 3–4 months. By the end of month three, your tattoo should look as bright and vivid as intended.
- Once healed, you're in maintenance mode — after the first 3–4 months infection is no longer a worry, but you can keep the ink from degrading.
- Stay hydrated. Plenty of water supports your overall health and improves skin elasticity.
- Prevent sun damage — sun-protective clothing and sunscreen keep your ink vibrant.
- Avoid rapid weight gain or loss. Quick changes in size can stretch or distort the tattoo.
